A Word about Dyes If you are interested in getting your feet wet using dyes without a lot of fuss and expensive equipment, then Jacquard Green Label Silk Colors and Jacquard iDyes are the way to go. Because the Green Label Silk Colors are in ready-to-use liquid form, you don’t have to deal with mixing dye powder or chemicals: you use them straight out of the bottle. You can use them for direct painting, resist work, tie-dyeing, and any other technique that I recommend using thin textile paints for.
I am particularly fond of silk. Generally speaking, the application of paint transforms a shiny surface to matte, but if you keep the paint relatively thin, a slight sheen will come through. Sometimes you might want to use a length of fabric with a very shiny surface specifically to add contrast between the painted and the nonpainted surfaces, as paint has the tendency to leave a matte finish. 26 27 S e l ec tin g Yo ur Fa br i c / Experimenting with Silks and Cottons Experimenting with Silks and Cottons If you are just beginning to explore fabric surface design, I recommend working with and trying the fabrics described in the chart below.
